Flora
The word flora means plants that live in a given area. Five examples of plants that live in the temperate deciduous biome are magnolia, yellow birch, silver birch, yulan magnolia, and larch.
The American beech (Fogus grandifolia) has nuts that fall to the ground, and animals, such as the opossum, feed on those nuts. Poeple can also sell those nuts that fall from the tree for food. Carpet moss (Mnium hernum) was used to cover ground in gardening, and was used to stuff the beds of people who lived in early times. The Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus) is an important source for the insects and birds that feed on the nectar and berries. The berries can be used for ink, and its bark can be used as an herbal medicine for cramps and asthma.

Adaptations:
- shagbark hickory has long taproots for getting extra water in times of drought
- wings on the seeds of the white birch help the seeds to fly farther to prevent competition
- white oak produces a taproot when it is a seedling to bring water to the plant in times of drought
Fauna
The word fauna means animals that live in a certain region. Six examples of fauna in the temperate deciduous forest are black bears, eagles, cardinals, the earthworm, ants, and the scorpion.
The bald eagle eats a variety of fish and other animals , and that helps the environment. The American black bear kills the elderly and weaklings of overpopulated prey. An animal called the Eastern Chipmunk moves seeds around, stores them underground, and are important food sources.

Endangered Plants in The Temperate Deciduous Biome
The red mulberry (Monus rubra) is a small understory tree reaching heights of 30 ft. Hybridization with the introduced white mulberry from Asia poses the greatest threat for this plant.
